This one is from Paul: Lennon's Wall, Prague

A blog picture from Paul today.  This is a picture Paul took recently whilst in Prague.  It is of graffiti at a famous site, called Lennon's Wall.

Taken on our new Sony RX100, the full size image is awesome.  So far we have blown it up to A0 size, and going to try to take it to 2A0 (big!). Click on the picture to make it bigger.

Here is what Wikipedia says about the wall.

"The Lennon Wall or John Lennon Wall, is a wall in Prague, Czech Republic. Once a normal wall, since the 1980s it has been filled with John Lennon-inspired graffiti and pieces of lyrics from Beatles songs.
In 1988, the wall was a source of irritation for the communist regime of Gustáv Husák. Young Czechs would write grievances on the wall and in a report of the time this led to a clash between hundreds of students and security police on the nearby Charles Bridge. The movement these students followed was described ironically as "Lennonism" and Czech authorities described these people variously as alcoholics, mentally deranged, sociopathic, and agents of Western capitalism.
The wall continuously undergoes change and the original portrait of Lennon is long lost under layers of new paint. Even when the wall was repainted by some authorities, on the second day it was again full of poems and flowers. Today, the wall represents a symbol of youth ideals such as love and peace.
The wall is owned by the Knights of Malta, who allowed the graffiti to continue on the wall, and is located at Velkopřevorské náměstí (Grand Priory Square), Malá Strana." Wikipedia, 2013

Milan update #10

I forgot to mention, but Paul got an Xmas pressie this year of a new, yes Nikon, camera.  Its a great compact camera as you can all see.  Its sensor, for the geeks, is 14MP... and yes that is larger than my SLR :D

The new camera also has a high speed mode which the boy put to the test by shooting these trams in the middle of Milan!  The things you see.... I recon Perth needs something like this!

:D

Thats the Milan trip over and done with... 2 days, 4 with travel... and he's back... but like the Indiana Jones Movies, where is he off to next!

Kings

Milan update #9

This time, museums and modern architecture..... well not good architecture.  From the courtyard of museum this view can be seen... it looks like a building tacked on to the top of the other one... and the contrast between the museums architecture is startling... what do you think?

Milan update #8

LOL! ok, I kid you not... following the brassieres, we have carrots... yes, carrots! I have no idea what they were promiting or selling, but hey, they look very friendly and happy!  Now I have no idea... maybe they did have carrots in their bike baskets?!?!

A quick trip to Washington part 4

Well, and finally for a four day trip (incl two days flying) he managed also to get the United States Capitol in, well a pic at least.  Construction commenced in 1793, at a cost of $412,000.  The building and grounds cover over 270 acres, and is the seat of government of the USA.

A quick trip to Washington part 2

So one of the official functions of the meeting was held at the National News Museum, which Paul said is VERY funky.  It includes bits of the antenna of the world trade centre, pieces of the Berlin wall, a helicopter in the foyer, a fully function news studio, and heaps of other bits and pieces.

Below, the TV studio....

The foyer, with helicopter!
Ahh, is my boy well trained or what.  The first commerical digital camera, a collaboration between Kodak and Nikon, the NC2000  :D

A quick trip to Washington part 1

OK, I just realised I forgot to include a trip in the blog... Paul did a quick trip to Washington.  Another impossibly short turnaround... very hard on him... fly, arrive, meeting, hop straight back on the plane... but I gotta say I much prefer to have him home :D

So this trip, yes to Washington.  He arrived and managed to get out and see a few things prior to the meeting... these pics, about 6:30AM, and it was about -4C.  Iconic places Washington.

The Whitehouse - the official residence and primary workplace of the President of the USA... and its white because its white painted sandstone... at six stories, two below ground...without an official visit, this is as close as you can get.

The Washington Momument - taking over 30 years to build, it stands 169m tall, made of marble granite and sandstone.  Its the worlds tallest stone structure and tallest obelisk.  Built to honour the achievements of George Washington.

And the Lincoln Memorial - is a presidential memorial to honour the 16th president Abraham Lincoln.  It features here, the seated president, and has two of his famous speeches inscribed inside it.  He was honoured for is freeing of slaves, and the unification of the American north and south.  And something I didn't know, it was the place where Martin Luther King gave his 'I have a dream' speech.

Back to Bali and the Monkey Forest

A couple of images from the Monkey Forest in Bali in Ubud.  A really nice place to go, unless your afraid of monkeys!  Hundreds of the little buggers!  The one with Paul was absolutely fascinated with the coconut as it was rattling and he wanted what was inside.  The image with the little monkey and the red blob is interesting... the red blob, ice cream.  Just goes to show that little people and little monkeys like ice cream... though he didn't like how cold it was... it was hilarious as he would take a lick and then squeal, then back for more....

The one with me, I think I posted before, but it is an amazing shot and just goes to show how used to people the monkey are... just a note to people who are planning to go... don't have ANYTHING on your head or in pockets... the little buggers are quick and know that they get food from you to get back your belongings... which of course are sold by helpful and industrious people in the forest
